The Day I Left

The day that I left
Did you notice I’d gone?
When I closed off my heart
Did you sense something wrong?

I must have been mistaken
To think that you cared…
I was foolish to believe
In the friendship we shared.

Your goal was to use me
You’ve made that quite clear
You reveled in my darkness
And fed off of my fears.

When my trust you had broken
And you’d bled my heart dry
You turned your back on me
Without a reason why.

Not one to cause drama
I left without a trace
To cause a scene is useless
So I handled it with grace.

I retreated to the shadows
With a pen I killed my pain
My heart I heavily guarded
Before coming back again.

When an icy wind blows you’ll find her
Under a moon so very bright
With auburn hair flowing in the cold air
And black eyes that glitter in the night.

She beckons to you from the forest
You cannot resist her bewitching gaze
She places your hand upon her breast
You are lost in an enchanted haze.

Her dark eyes bore into your soul
While she leads you to an autumn fire
She reveals her mysteries untold
As you succumb to your desires.

This enchantress with skin of porcelain
Will weave her magic in your heart
Ruby lips utter words softly spoken
From her side you’ll never depart.

Smoke and Mirrors

I only reveal what I want you to see
The things that are lovely and sweet
No whining or pain you will find here
Understand I’m just being discreet.

The smile on my face becomes frozen
When memories of horror refuse to hide
On those days my humor is my weapon
I use to force the demons back inside.

Laughter has become my salvation
Keeping the walls I’ve built firmly in place
In my eyes you may see a hint of sorrow
Though a smile lights the rest of my face.

You may think I am being superficial
When I answer deep questions with a joke
That’s just how I’ve learned to survive this world
Keeping the walls I’ve built from turning to smoke.

No One Of Consequence

She stands silently as the world is passing by

Fading into the background of other people’s lives

She is no one of consequence, that you should notice her

Just another woman where so many others were.

She hides her feelings well so no one will ever know

The secret pain within her that she can’t seem to let go

A damaged little girl whose existence she denies

Although you can still see her when you look into her eyes.

Sometimes the memories are just too much to bear

So she pushes them down and pretends she doesn’t care

Her trust was broken at such a tender young age

She thinks that is why she can’t let go of the rage

She wonders if anyone would notice if she was gone

She knows without a doubt that life would still go on

She is but one woman in a great human sea

No one of consequence, she fades into me.

Autumn Wind

Standing on the river bank

Watching clouds drift through the sky

Leaves fall in a graceful dance

Spiraling to the earth below

To find peace amid their fallen comrades.

For a moment behold autumn’s splendor

Brilliant hues of red and gold

Against a bright blue sky

Soon to be just a memory

Cloaked beneath winter’s snow.
